History

In the 1830s, America's railroads expanded into the city, leading to an increased city settlement. A decade and a half later, two rails crisscrossed through the center of the city, leading to population booms and the city's earnest development. During the Civil War, it became a home front for the south, and at one point, was even a central military medical center.  By the end of the Civil War, the city was all but destroyed. Georgian's returning home rebuilt the city with enthusiasm, and it once again became a buzzing metropolis. Due to the vital railroad connections, the city was able to rebuild itself as an economic hub, and the population started to boom once again.

In the 1960s, it became central to the Civil Rights Movement, due in part to its diversity and tense race relations. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself was born on Auburn Avenue.
